OHADA Signs a Cooperation Agreement with OAPI

Prof. Dorothé Cossi SOSSA, Permanent Secretary of the Organization for the Harmonization in Africa of Business Law (OHADA) and Dr. Paulin EDOU EDOU, Director General of the African Organization for Intellectual Property (OAPI) signed in Yaounde on 9 May 2016, a Cooperation Agreement between the two integration organizations.

In their speeches, both the Permanent Secretary of OHADA and the Director General of OAPI highlighted the complementarity of actions of the two sister organizations. The virtually similar membership of both Institutions, the interweaving of intellectual property law and OHADA business law, the similarity of integration approach implemented by both organizations were presented, in addition to other factors favoring the rationalization of interventions and enhanced cooperation.

It should be emphasized that the Cooperation Agreement that has just been signed falls in line with the consultation platform prescribed by the Conference of Heads of State and Government at its meeting held in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) on October 17, 2013, during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of OHADA. In this same perspective, OHADA has already negotiated a permanent consultation framework with various sub regional organizations and institutions producing norms, in a bid to prevent conflicts of norms and jurisdictions. The Cooperation Agreement with OAPI is a further step in strengthening the legal security on the African continent. / –
